10 Shameful Incidents of "60 years of Independent India"

August 17th, 2007

In the series of Top 10s of “60 years of Independent India”, Today, I would like to add “Shameful Incidents”. I find it very difficult to select Top 10, but somehow I have managed to select Top 10 Shameful incidents. Because of repetitive hindu-muslim riot incidents, I have categorized it in the general term of “Communal Violence”.

  1. Killings during Partition (1947)
  2. India-China War (1962)
  3. 21 Month of Indian Emergency (1975–1977)
  4. Assassination of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi
  5. 1984 Anti-Sikh riots
  6. Implementation of Recommendations of Mandal Commission(1989)
  7. Rise of Underworld & Mafia during 90’s
  8. Babri Mosque Demolition & Aftermath(1992)
  9. Surat Plague(1994)
  10. Communal Violence

I am very much ready to alter this list, if you guys suggest me the incident which can be replaced.

  1. How about the socialist legacy of Nehru, considering it is one of the major reasons why a huge proportion of the country is still poor? After all, many of the incidents in your list would have had a much smaller chance of occurring in a well-to-do country.

  2. Shailesh – I am also very critical of Nehru and always believed that Sardar Patel would have been the better Prime Minister. Apart from the socialist policies, he is also blamed for ignoring the needs of India’s Defence Services which led to shameful defeat against China in 1962
